چکیده

Endomyocardial fibrosis (EF) is characterized by marked endocardial thickening of the apex and subvalvular apparatus of one or both ventricles. It is considered a primary and chronic form of restrictive cardiomyopathy (the acute form is Löffler’s disease) and is associated with inflammation and hypereosinophilia secondary to chronic processes such as parasite infection or autoimmune disease. We describe the case of a 38-year-old Guinean man who was admitted to the Internal Medicine department for left upper quadrant pain. He had a previous history of malaria. Physical exam revealed a 4-cm hepatomegaly

Evaluation of the relationship between hepatic and cardiac iron overload with MRI T2* and carotid intima media thickness with Doppler ultrasound in beta thalassemia major patients

Background: Iron overload is caused early progression of atherosclerosis in beta thalassemia patients due to regular repeated blood transfusion. MRI T2* is a gold standard non-invasive method for detecting hepatic and cardiac iron overload. The aim of this study was the comparison of carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) in the patients and healthy control groups with Doppler ultrasound for ear...

Endomyocardial fibrosis. Problems in differential diagnosis.

The clinical and angiographic findings in 5 consecutive patients with congestive cardiac failure are presented to illustrate the pitfalls in the clinical diagnosis of endomyocardial fibrosis. In one patient the clinical diagnosis was confirmed at angiography while another patient who had angiographic evidence of early right ventricular endomyocardial fibrosis was diagnosed clinically as mitral ...

[Usefulness of magnetic resonance imaging in the assessment of endomyocardial disease].

Endomyocardial disease is a restrictive cardiomyopathy that includes Löffler endocarditis, which is characterized by hypereosinophilia, and endomyocardial fibrosis, which is not. Echocardiography enables cardiac function and anatomy to be assessed and the differential diagnosis of other causes of restrictive disease, but magnetic resonance imaging provides information about the tissue itself. F...

Images in cardiovascular medicine: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and eosinophilic endomyocardial fibrosis.

We report the case of a 41-year-old man who presented with lymphoma 2 years ago and was treated by chemotherapy. Biological findings revealed important eosinophilia, although explorations did not show any lymphoma recidivism or evidence of active infection. One month later, the patient presented with fever and clinical signs of heart failure as the onset of a central catheter infection occurred...

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging for the diagnosis of endomyocardial fibrosis.

Endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) is a common cause of restrictive cardiomyopathy in the tropics and has been underdiagnosed in the past. Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate EMF from other restrictive cardiomyopathies. Cur- rently, echocardiography is used for the initial investigations that might lead to a diagnosis of EMF. In this study, we evaluate the usefulness of cardiac magnetic reson...
